UX Megastore #1

Here we are. Tonight is the sweet night of Christmas. Tomorrow morning, under the tree, you will discover packages to open. And maybe from the 26th, for some of them you will put them back on sale on the Bon Coin, E-Bay or Amazon. When new uses and old-fashioned pleasures collide...

Armed with this savings, you will be able to fill your shelves with books, podcasts, films on Design, User Experience, Innovation, and many other subjects related to our businesses.
So, for this first edition of our UX Megastore, we are dedicated to books with a selection to learn, deepen or even be inspired.

To start in UX

Often, I am asked what books to read in UX to start. Generally, I recommend three works which seem to me to resist fashions and time.

Design of everyday things – Le Classique Plus

By dint of reducing Don Norman to a few quotes, we could forget that he is the author of one of the fundamental works of the User Experience. If this book may seem outdated, it is because it has decompartmentalized ergonomics, design, experience and innovation to create the modern User Experience. The one that has transformed the interfaces we use.
A true manifesto for human-centered design, DOET remains a must to read, reread and be inspired by. Because of course, behind every evidence, there are years of research and feedback...

Don't make me think – The Most Fun

Everything is in the title. Don't wait any longer to read this clear, intelligent and inspiring book. You won't find the recipes for success there. They don't exist. Santa Claus exists. No, you will find there how to chart your own course of padawan to develop your UX Jedi Mind. Steve Krug designed this book as an experience to read quickly to be applied quickly. A must have.

UX Design Methods – The Best Method

The work of Carine Lallemand and Guillaume Gronion has become a classic in the libraries of UX Designers. If it is not essential to become a good UX, it is to become seasoned with different methodologies.
The two authors have identified the main workshops by listing their principle, their objective(s), and their level of difficulty. A fine work of census and didactic accompaniment. And, it is always interesting to dive back into it to prepare for your workshops.

There are many other works that could have been included in this section. I made the choice to retain only the three that seemed to me the most striking.

After learning music theory and its scales, you might as well start listening to Kamasi Washington or the Jerome's playlist...

Design sprint – The Most Californian

The famous Google Venture method explained and compiled in a book by Jake Knapp. From the organization of meals to the detail of the workshops, here, everything is reviewed. Great summary of the different UX currents, design thinking, lean or agile, this book and this method requires a certain seasoning of UX methods.
Contrary to what its form might suggest, facilitating a Design sprint requires some experience in design and group facilitation.

UX Strategy – The Most “In tune with the times”

Jaime Levy uses UX methods to evolve from UX Design to UX Strategy. Nothing revolutionary in this book except its desire to take the User Experience out of wireframes. An interesting book to push your thinking and form an opinion on this trend that is flourishing on LinkedIn.

To step aside

Because it is important to look around us to continue designing original experiences, we have to look elsewhere...

ReWork – The Most Start(me) Up

Understand work differently. Such is the intention of the authors of this bestseller. Appreciated in start-ups, it is very useful for all designers working in management or freelance. Indeed, through a flow of simple and effective chapters, the creators of Base Camp offer their feedback and share their (often) wise advice. My favorite chapter:

“Planning is guessing”

Change by design – The Most Human

Design is more than a strategy. It is change management.

Through this manifesto book, Tim Brown, CEO of IDEO, develops and shares his vision of Design. A human-centered approach that extends from the design of the premises of his agency to the support of his clients.
Far from the buzzwords associated with design thinking and change management, the designer easily develops his vision of the profession and through it his vision of the world. Refreshing.
