JavaScript, JS-Republic's star programming language, which has become essential in our current interactive web interfaces, is actually not that recent... It was created in 1995 in the space of 10 days by Brendan Eich, an American computer scientist.
Brendan Eich was born in 1961 in Piitsburg. He began his career in the IT sector at Silicon Graphics, a company specializing in computer graphics and 3D processing, where he spent seven years in charge of the code, the operating system and the network.
But it is above all his experience on behalf of the Netscape Communication Corporation (an American computer company bought by AOL) that will mark a turning point in his professional career and will impact the world of the web as a whole.
The father of JavaScript
Brendan Eich brought JavaScript to life while working for Netscape Communication Corporation, an American computer company acquired by AOL, then well known for its web browser and HTTP server.
The purpose of this new scripting language was to enhance the commercial HTTP server offering for the Netscape browser. For it Brendan Eich was inspired by several languages including Java by integrating a simplified syntax.
His involvement with Mozilla
In 1998, Brendan Eich became an IT architect at Mozilla then participated in the creation of the Mozilla Foundation as a member of the board of directors and then technical director in 2005.
He will once again participate in the invention of a Rust programming language : secure language developed for Mozilla Research.
In 2014, Brendan Eich held the position of general manager of Mozilla Corps and took the helm of this organization… But only 15 days after his appointment, the inventor of JavaScript quits his job and decides to distance himself with this company.
“I resigned from the position of CEO and am leaving Mozilla to take some rest, take some trips with my family and look at the problems from other angles”
This surprising departure generated many controversies and would seem to be due to conflicts of convictions relating to the legalization of same-sex marriage and the positions taken by the giant Google on this subject and on which Mozilla depends a lot.
Brave software
Recently, Brendan Eich has been working as the general manager of the Brave Software company in which it is working on releasing a new, more secure web browser (combating user tracking, pop-up ads and hacks).
A first alpha version was released in February 2016, working in particular thanks to HTTPS Everywhere.
Brendan Eich is a very present and close figure in the developer community. He frequently intervenes in large dedicated events around the world.
See you soon, for a next portrait of an emblematic figure of our professions.
