[Guideline] Rapid Prototyping

In the jungle of user journeys

Prototyping only the essentials to avoid getting lost: this is the challenge of rapid protyping. Here is a guideline to accompany you in a methodological approach, proven and tested in the field.

Objectives rapid prototyping

If you had to convince your team or your sponsor to practice lo-fi prototyping, here are some arguments to make the case:

  • Design quickly a solution
  • Fluidify the workflow: UX-Designer, UI-Designer & Developers
  • Test and validate hypotheses
  • Reduce development costs
  • To convince the makers of Design choices

An approach flexible

Weniger, aber besser – Dieter Rams

Above all, it is a question of adopting “Less, but better” in favor of “Quick & Dirty”. Nobody will adopt a poorly designed product, whose content is vague and the value proposition unknown. It is therefore necessary to seek the essential, to animate the good course.

Frame your project with Design Thinking

First, you must call on the right actors in the project: the developers, the business and yourself (UX-Designer). Thus are represented: the technical feasibility, the business viability and the desires of the users… Innovation will be at the center of your interactions.

Design the right screens with Lean UX

Gothelf & Seiden's approach will allow you to set up a collaborative work organization. Thus, in connection with the PO and the Scrum team, you prioritize the functionalities and delimit the perimeter of your MVP (the basis of your prototype).

#1 Understand

Observe and listen to understand your users. It is fundamental and yet very often projects start without having taken the time for user research. Done, however minimal it may be, this step will bring you valuable resources for the future.

Share your personas with your team. This is essential for what follows. You need to take them with you on your users' journeys.

#2 Design

Converge towards a value proposition and a solution. This is the phase of materializing your assumptions. After doing your zoning, you design your screens according to the fundamental rules of ergonomics. You build your navigation. Your wireframes need to be dapper. At this stage, work with 4 hands with your Artistic Director or your UI-Designer. Sketch ou Adobe xd will greatly facilitate your task at this stage.

Tips: Don't forget to take care of your content! It is as important as a visual or a micro-interaction.

#3 Prototypes

Materializing ideas makes it possible to measure their complexity and test their feasibility. Thus, by animating your solution, you will give meaning to the journey of your users. There is no need at this stage to develop all the interactions. Based on your user journeys, write a scenario on which you will conduct your user tests...

#4 Test

Abandon your evidence and your convictions to go further. You will seek to validate the value proposition of the service, the design, the editorial... In mode guerilla or in the lab, meet your end users without waiting to hear their feedback on your product and your work.

#5 Iterate and collaborate

Following this first rapid prototyping, you will be able to validate your design hypotheses. In just a few steps, you just saved valuable time on your design.
From this phase, include your stakeholders in co-design, information prioritization workshops to dive deeper into your product. Thus, together you will build an original solution, relevant and centered on your users.
