On-board HMI: towards smart and safe mobility

HMI
What impact and role can human-machine interfaces have in the automotive world?

The evolution of human-machine interfaces (HMIs) in the automotive sector has certainly seen gradual, sometimes discreet, development, however, technological advances have recently given a boost to the automotive world. In an increasingly connected society, these innovations no longer just accompany our daily lives: they are profoundly transforming the way we interact with our vehicles, thus revolutionizing the driving experience and our relationship with the automobile.

I'm Marwa FRAWES, an Experience Systems Engineer at Valeo. In this article, I invite you to discover the impact of human-machine interfaces (HMIs) in the automotive sector.

How are these technological innovations transforming our experience in vehicles?

The rise of modern cars, particularly electric and autonomous ones, represents a major and remarkable advancement for the automotive industry. This evolution will result in technological innovations that accelerate the adoption of connected vehicles, meeting a growing demand for safer and more efficient transportation solutions. "The transition to connected vehicles is accelerating, driven by technological advances and increased demand for safer and more efficient transportation options.".

Today, the driving experience is no longer limited to driving alone, but rather broader. It incorporates intelligent interactions aimed at improving safety, comfort, and ergonomics, all thanks to the use of new technologies in the automotive world such as ADAS and infotainment.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and infotainment platforms provide drivers with enhanced assistance. These devices allow, among other things, real-time monitoring of vehicle status, access to important information (door locks, battery level), and interaction with intelligent and personalized interfaces. According to PTOLEMUS Consulting Group, more than half of the vehicles on the road worldwide by this time, or approximately 370 million, will be equipped with ADAS or automation technologies.

The impact of ADAS on HMIs

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) enhance the interaction between humans and their vehicles by relying on a combination of sensors, cameras, radars, and advanced technologies. They provide essential information to enhance driver safety and comfort. ADAS features include hazard detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning (LDW), and adaptive cruise control (ACC). All of these features develop a new relationship with the various passengers.

The impact of infotainment on HMIs

Infotainment is an integrated information system that uses multimedia interfaces, such as screens installed in the vehicle, to provide features designed to facilitate driving, such as navigation, music, and many others. The main objective of this system is to improve the user experience by making driving simpler and more immersive, while minimizing distractions on the road.

Embedded HMI: an interface designed for the user?

The modern vehicle is no longer limited to its role as a simple means of transport; it is transforming into a real living space thanks to the different technologies mentioned below.

Vehicle interactions are now done through voice, gestures, or gaze, offering an immersive and intuitive experience. Faced with these developments, manufacturers must therefore address several challenges: strengthening safety, optimizing comfort, and improving interaction between passengers. Some models, such as those of BYD “Build Your Dreams” even incorporates entertainment features, such as karaoke, promoting friendly and fun moments between passengers. Far from being limited to a simple information display, the human-machine interface (HMI) becomes a true traveling companion, capable of adapting to driving preferences and habits. We are currently facing tailor-made HMIs.

With ergonomic designs and natural interactions, the future of the automobile relies on increasingly intelligent and connected interfaces. By focusing on innovative user experiences, manufacturers are shaping more fluid, secure, and personalized mobility. Embedded HMI is paving the way for a new era where the automobile becomes a true extension of the user, anticipating their needs and simplifying their daily lives.

Embedded HMIs thus play a central role in facilitating human-machine interaction. Thanks to interactive and intuitive experiences, they enable seamless collaboration between drivers and passengers. Brands like Tesla, BMW ou Mercedes-Benz thus develop immersive solutions adapted to the needs of each user.

The automotive world continues to evolve. What does the future hold for augmented reality in our vehicles?

In the next episode, we will explore this topic in detail.
